People mix up peptides and steroids because they show up in the same places: the same gyms, the same forums, sometimes the same stack. Chemically, they have almost nothing in common, and US law treats them differently too.
Peptides vs Steroids: What’s the Difference?
| Peptides | Anabolic steroids | |
|---|---|---|
| What they’re made of | Short chains of amino acids | A four-ring carbon core, the same family as cholesterol |
| How they work | Bind receptors on the outside of a cell and send a signal | Pass into the cell and switch genes on or off |
| Examples | BPC-157, CJC-1295, ipamorelin, semaglutide, tirzepatide | Testosterone, nandrolone, oxandrolone (Anavar) |
| US legal status | Approved ones are prescription drugs; most research peptides aren’t approved for human use | Schedule III controlled substances |
Many peptides people use for muscle or recovery work by nudging your own hormones. CJC-1295 and ipamorelin, for example, push your pituitary to release more of your own growth hormone. Anabolic steroids skip that step: they are the hormone, or a lab-made version of it.
Is TRT a Steroid?
Yes. Testosterone is the original anabolic-androgenic steroid, and TRT, whether it’s testosterone cypionate, enanthate or a gel, delivers the same testosterone your body makes. It’s a Schedule III controlled substance in the US, and it’s banned in tested sport.
What makes TRT different from steroid use isn’t the drug. It’s the dose and the goal. TRT aims to bring a low testosterone level back into the normal range, under a prescription. The TRT guide covers how that works in practice, and the TRT dose calculator turns a weekly mg dose into the mL to draw.
Is TRT Safer Than Steroids?
At replacement doses, with monitoring, TRT has much better evidence behind it than steroid misuse:
- The dose is a fraction. NIDA says people misusing anabolic steroids can take doses 10 to 100 times higher than the doses used to treat medical conditions.
- There’s trial data. In TRAVERSE, a heart-safety trial in 5,246 men aged 45 to 80 with low testosterone, testosterone was no worse than placebo for heart attacks and strokes, but more men on it got atrial fibrillation, kidney injury and blood clots in the lungs.
- There’s a monitoring plan. Testosterone labels say to check hematocrit, because testosterone raises red blood cell counts, and to watch blood pressure. It can also shut down sperm production.
Steroid misuse at those higher doses is linked to early heart attacks, strokes, liver tumors, kidney failure, shrunken testicles and psychiatric problems (NIDA). TRT isn’t risk-free, but it’s a known quantity. If you’re on it, TRT blood work covers what to test and when.
Is HGH a Steroid?
No. HGH (somatropin) is a protein made of 191 amino acids. It’s a hormone, but not a steroid hormone. It’s also not a peptide by the FDA’s definition, which calls any amino acid chain longer than 40 a protein.
HGH isn’t on the DEA’s controlled-substance schedules, but a federal law makes it a crime to distribute it for anything other than an FDA-approved use with a prescription. WADA bans it at all times. If you’re working with HGH doses, the HGH dosage calculator converts IU to mg and shows the units to draw.
Are Peptides Safer Than Steroids?
There’s no single answer, because “peptides” covers drugs with very different evidence:
- Approved peptides like semaglutide and tirzepatide have labels that list their side effects and who shouldn’t take them.
- Research peptides like BPC-157, TB-500 and GHK-Cu have lab and animal studies but almost no human safety data. A 2026 review of BPC-157 found three human studies with 30 people in total.
- Anabolic steroids have decades of data, and a lot of it is about harm at misuse doses.
So a research peptide isn’t proven safer than a steroid. Its risks are mostly unknown. Are peptides safe? covers what is known.
Do Peptides Count as Steroids?
Not legally or chemically. In sport it barely matters: the 2026 WADA Prohibited List bans testosterone and the popular peptides (BPC-157, TB-500, MOTS-c, CJC-1295, ipamorelin and the rest of the growth hormone peptides) at all times, in separate sections. A standard workplace drug test looks for neither: the federal panel covers marijuana, cocaine, opioids, amphetamines and PCP. The full list is in will peptides fail a drug test.
Why So Many People Run Both
Peptides and testosterone aren’t an either-or for a lot of people. Among Regimen users on testosterone, 45% also take a peptide, most often MOTS-c (17%) and GHK-Cu (16%), and 16% take HGH. That makes tracking harder: when your energy, sleep or hematocrit changes, you need to know which compound did it. The multi-compound tracking guide covers how people sort that out.
Track TRT and Peptides in One App
Regimen is a TRT tracker and a peptide tracker in one app: ester-specific level curves for testosterone, half-life tracking for peptides, and a separate IM or subQ site rotation for each compound. Total and free testosterone, E2 and hematocrit, scanned or typed in, sit on the same timeline as your shots.

Frequently asked questions
Are peptides healthier than steroids?
Anabolic steroid misuse has well-documented harms, including heart problems, liver tumors and shrunken testicles. Approved peptides have labelled side effects. Most research peptides, like BPC-157, haven't been tested enough in people to compare.
Are peptides safer than testosterone?
It depends on which peptide and which testosterone. Prescribed testosterone at replacement doses has large trials behind it, including TRAVERSE, and a label that says what to monitor. Most peptides sold online have almost no human data. An unknown risk isn't the same as a small one.
What app tracks TRT and peptides together?
Regimen tracks testosterone, peptides and GLP-1s in one app: injection logging with custom scheduling, ester-specific level curves, injection site rotation, side effects, and bloodwork such as hematocrit and IGF-1 on the same timeline as your doses. Free for one compound, no time limit; Premium if you track more than one.
